Memories of Manning 2020.

They say that a joy shared is a joy doubled so if there are 4 families going on a joint-ski trip together, is that a joy quadrupled?
I think it certainly is.

This is the second year we all went up to Manning Park, 4 families (8 adults, 9 kids altogether). We booked 2 chalets this year and it was perfect for 2 families share one chalet. We had our separate bedroom and bathrooms and shared the kitchen. The joy was in doing everything together.
It snowed 16 cm of new snow the day we arrived (incredible for the first weekend of March!) The only thing better than powder turns is powder turns with friends. It was so fun for me to be back on my snowboard and ride with an entourage of 9 kids ripping it up on skis.

Manning is small enough of a mountain that the kids could split up and we could easily find each other again. Nallie and her friend were old enough to take the chairlift by themselves and they enjoyed the great privilege of being able to go skiing on their own. There was also enough powder on the blue chair for us to make some incredible first tracks and Simon to clear and land this jump...
When you're on vacation you don't want to cook so it was so nice to coordinate our meals. One of our particularly organized friends had a google doc to designate us to all bring parts of the meal. I didn't look at the list before we left and forgot all the lettuce (oops) and someone else forgot to bring pizza. But the great thing with group projects is that it always seems to work out with the effort other people put in. It was great to cook and eat all the meals together. Sometimes we had all the adults in one chalet and all the kids in the other chalet (putting the oldest Grade 5 boys 'in charge'). The kids enjoyed 'vacation food' which included Reese Puffs and Pop Tarts - nothing like a good sugar rush to start the day. We also had the first annual Menno-Men bake-off....both Menno men called their mothers for trade-secret favourite dessert recipes. Both desserts were delicious and enjoyed by all of us. Next year, we'll have to get the other men baking something too!
We enjoyed the pool and hot tub together. (Although later we regretted this as many of us got sick when we got back and we blamed the murky waters of the hot tub.)
The kids enjoyed sleepovers and swapping bunk beds. There was much planning on logistics of who sleeps in whose room in which bunk but it eventually all got sorted and everyone slept well. It was so fun for Nallie to wake up and play dolls with friend and Noah to wake up and play ball  and race RC cars with a bunch of boys.

Last year we enjoyed a game of ice hockey on the frozen rink but by March, it was too warm so we couldn't do that. The dads and kids were still able to play a game of road hockey though. My ultra-competitive 6-year-old was driving me crazy with all the tears over not winning or not getting the puck but I think everyone else had a good time.
Notice it? The bawling sad face boy on the far left in the group picture? Ahaha.
At least the sadness didn't last long when we transitioned to some sledding fun.
It really is a blessing to have joined Christ City church 3 years ago and have made good friends that enjoy the snow as much as we do and added bonus that our kids are all similar in age and all like each other. Til next year...

Past, present, and future.

A new year and a new decade and all those memories popping up on my social media makes me feel so nostalgic. What a decade it has been. A lot of joy. A lot of tears. Not a lot sleep. Probably the least amount of sleep in this decade than any other one I have had.
In the last decade 2010 to 2020, I...

  • experienced the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver
  • got shingles preparing my MA thesis defense
  • graduated from UBC with a Masters in Special Education
  • passed the Board Certified Behavior Analyst board exam
  • went on my last pre-kid trip with Simon to the Mayan Riveria
  • experienced a 31 hour labour on nitrous oxide, morphine and the epidural
  • experienced a super speedy natural birth that almost happened in the car
  • learned how to survive on 2-hour intervals of sleep for several years
  • experienced the joy of breast-feeding along with cracked nipples,  mastitis, and realizing I could literally shoot milk across the room
  • rushed my 5-month old to the hospital having him stay there for 4 days recovering from pneumonia, RSV and dehydration
  • had more than one emotional breakdown trying to 'do-it-all' balancing work and motherhood and experienced the grace, forgiveness and support from a loving husband
  • cheered for my husband as he participated in several GranFondo cycling races and also prayed as my husband recovered from Rhabdomyolysis
  • held my breath as my husband quit his job at Link Design and started a new position at Keith Panel Systems (now celebrating that he is so much happier at KPS)
  • Simon completed some of the hardest architectural projects of his career (the Kitsilano Coast Guard renovation, Fly Over Canada)
  • fell in love with long distance running and ran a personal record of 1:49:18 at the 2014 Scotia Half-Marathon
  • had my son projectile vomit on me (and several passengers) during a 7 hour flight from Mexico
  • left Willingdon church and started going to Christ City South Vancouver
  • quit my job as a senior behaviour consultant at Family Centred Practices Group
  • cheered as both my kids graduated from preschool
  • cried when both kids started kindergarten
  • started a new job as a Special Education Coordinator at Vancouver Christian School
  • hiked many mountains with the kids (Sea to Sky, Grouse Grind, BCMC trail) and survived our first overnight hike with both kids to Garabaldi Lake
  • Simon went on his first rollercoaster  Legoland, San Diego and splurged and stayed in the pirate room at the Legoland Hotel
Present Jan 2020
  • both Simon and I are working full time AKA school days feel like running on a treadmill while juggling eggs and the eggs are on fire
  • get the privilege and joy of working at the same school that my kids go to
  • Nallie is in Grade 3 and Noah is in Grade 1, my office is in the same hallway as their classroom and I love that Noah still gives me the best hugs and exclaims "Mommy!" when he sees me in the hallway (Nallie smiles at me but doesn't hug me in the hallway anymore)
  • learned how to order groceries online
  • training for my first full marathon alongside my supportive husband
  • part of an awesome community group at Christ City
  • Noah has almost outgrown being theatrically dramatic over small problems and continues to be the funniest person in our family, he loves soccer, dinosaurs, ninjas, sharks (particularly megadon) and Lego with a passion
  • Nallie loves her friends, is learning to raise her hand at school, no longer melts down when asked to play the piano and is enjoying dance
  • both kids are signed up for the first ever triathalon and a 15 km bike race
Future 2030

Simon and I would have just celebrated 25 years together

Kids won't be kids anymore, they will be 16 and 18 years old (ahhh...panicking as I write this)
  • praying that Nallie and Noah will be kind, generous and tenacious human beings that love God and love others
  • praying that I will still be working at the same school as them and they don't purposely hide when they see me at school
  • praying that we will still have Friday FamJam nights and watch movies or play boardgames together
  • praying that Simon and I continue to be each other's biggest fans
  • praying that our health remains and we continue enjoying the great outdoors together
Christmas Card December 2019..wonder what 2030 will look like
